Der Tod in Venedig
Marcel kommt nach Venedig, wo er wie auf den nächsten Seiten beschrieben Albertine in einer Weise endgültig vergessen wird, die den Vergleich mit dem Tod seiner Vorstellung von ihr rechtfertigt.
Das Zitat aber, dass ich hier bemerkenswert fand, ist der letzte Satz vor der Episode in Venedig:
Die Wahrheit und das Leben sind beide sehr schwer zu bewältigen, und ich behielt von ihnen, ohne dass ich sie alles in allem kannte, einen Eindruck zurück, bei dem vielleicht Müdigkeit noch die Trauer überwog.

Sehr schön, sehr traurig.
Marcel visits Venice, where he will - as he describes on the following pages - forget Albertine definitely, in a way that justifies the comparison to the ultimate death of Albertine's picture he has in mind.
The quote I found remarkable here, though, is the last sentence before the Venice episode begins:
Truth and life are very arduous, and there remained to me from them, without my really knowing them, an impression in which sorrow was perhaps actually dominated by exhaustion.
