Impertinenter Stinker
Der Titel ist ein Insider, aufgefallen ist mir nur dieses schöne Zitat. Es stammt ursprünglich von Marcels Großmutter, an die sich seine Mutter erinnert, am Bahnhof Venedigs wartend, während ihr Sohn - gelähmt wie trotzig - im Hotel ausharrt, wo er sich in den Kopf gesetzt hat noch bleiben zu wollen, da die Ankunft der Baronin Putbus mit Bediensteten (wer's gelesen hat, erinnert sich an ihre berüchtigte Jungfer) angesagt ist:
"Es ist merkwürdig, niemand kann zugleich so unerträglich und nett wie dieser Kleine sein."

Da ist wohl was dran. Und auch in manchen vorhergegangenen Längen der Entflohenen könnte man das bonmot anwenden. Aber schließlich kommt Marcel ja doch, der Zug fährt nicht ohne ihn, während wir uns durch eine kurze letzte Episode der Wiedergefundenen Zeit nähern.

It's originally been made by Marcel's grandmother, whom his mother remembers while waiting at Venice train station for her son, who - paralyzed and defiant at the same time - remains at the hotel, where he's planning to wait for baroness Putbus and her attendants (if you've read it you will remember her infamous maid), whose upcoming arrival has been announced. Again, this particular sentence seems to be missing in Moncrief:
"It's odd, nobody can be so unbearable and at the same time so kind as this boy."

There's definitely a point to that. And you can apply this bonmot also to some lengthy episodes in The Fugitive. But finally Marcel arrives, the train doesn't leave without him, while - through a short last chapter - we approach the Time Regained.
